Everyone I knew went to school and sent their children to school. I have all of mine down for top Sydney schools and pretty much had their education all mapped out for them because that is what you do if you want to give your children the best education and opportunities. But now we are faced with a potential move overseas where my little darling would be required to start school next September at only 4 years and 3 months. This is way too young to make a little child spend 5 days a week at school. I would much rather have Keira spend her days with me where she can play, read, draw and learn rather than spend her days in a classroom with 25 other children. There is plenty of time to go to school.....
Combine this with the fact that she is already bringing home worksheets from pre-school, which I have a problem with! Worksheets on matching, last time I checked we learn matching at home with coins, buttons, beads and like objects not from a photocopied worksheet. It said well done keira on the bottom, I couldn't stop thinking about it because it just didn't feel right. Ask Keira why she loves pre-school and she tells you playing with barbies. Ask her what else and she says playing with barbies. Ask her for a third time and she'll tell you the same! Whats next, formal written tests??????
So we're opting out for a while, perhaps homeschooling is just an extension of being a stay at home mum and that is why it just feels right for me. My husband, well he thinks its a bit radical and out there and is insisting I have to send her the following year when she's 5.....she'll probably be ready but I'm not sure I will be!!! If you think its a bit radical and out there.... thats ok, I'll still love you. You can hang out at my retro mummy blog. But if you're interested then come back again, I'll be sharing our thoughts, activities, favourite books and what we're doing!

Congratulations Corrie on your decision to home school! So important to do what we think and feel is best for our kids. I think about home schooling often, looked into it a number of time, but I'm not brave enough or organised enough to give it a go. So hats off to you for giving it a go!! Look forward to watching Keira's adventuress in home schooling. btw Overseas?? xox
Good for you, and great for Keira! I'm certainly not brave enough, but I can totally understand your reasoning. Will follow with interest...
Hi Corrie, I just found your new blog here. You're moving overseas?? :( Anyway, I think homeschooling is a great idea... I would do it too if I were in the same situation. A is going to be 5.5yo when she goes to school next year, and I still feel awful about making her go 5 days a week! (Yes I'm an overprotective mummy, why do you ask? :) ) I'll be following your adventures with interest too!
Good for you Corrie!! You are brave but I agree that 4 is too little for school!
I think we all have to make the decision that we feel is right & I think it is completely reasonable to to keep Kiera at home with you a bit longer. We have been lucky to find a really great, small school for our kids & they will be there from kinder to grade 6. So far our school (kinder) experience has been really great, but I wouldn't be happy if Ryder was coming home with worksheets/homework to do either! I think learning should be play based for small children & that can be done at home or at school!
Oh I envy you, that you are thinking all this through BEFORE your little ones go to school. I gave HSing a (pretty terrible) try last year, and gave up, now I wish I had tried a bit harder. Maybe I will try again one day...
4 years old is way too young for school! over here in NZ we have the option to keep our kids home until they are 6. but most usually start at 5. My youngest daughter will turn 5 in September of the year she should start but I am trying to convince my husband we should keep her home until the year starts fresh the following February. And homework from pre school sounds absurd!!
all 4 of my kids attended kindergarten which is only for 3 hours a day and basically very structured "play time" with small stints of mat time to get ready for school.
